After the death of the Earl of Hareford the family gathers to hear what legacies they can expect in the absence of an heir. However, Parchester, the family solicitor has tracked down the heir to the fortune & family seat of Hareford Hall.

After the initial shock of discovering that the heir was Bill Snibson, a barrow boy from Lambeth, Maria, Duchess of Dene decides to shape Bill into suitable gentleman befitting the title of Earl of Hareford. Lady Jacqueline, Bill's cousin, is so determined to get a title and the money that goes with it that she ends her engagement to the Honourable Gerald.

Although Bill wants to marry his childhood sweetheart, Sally Smith, Sally tries to convince Bill that he is now too good for him although she loves him dearly. She gatecrashes Bill's ‘coming out’ party with her friends but everyone, including the Duchess joins in the fun of the Lambeth Walk.

When the Duchess sends Sally back to Lambeth she finds an unexpected sympathiser in Sir John.(Sir John has suffered for years after loving the Duchess for years without reciprocation) He arranges for Sally to be coached secretly by a well known friend who lives in Wimpole Street.
